Emerald Almsbowl Pagoda
Emerald Almsbowl Pagoda lies on Theinganeik Peak
in Thaton, Mon State. It was built for completion on
the full moon day of Tabodwe, Sakarit 128. That
year, Shin Maheinda and Shin Thawna of Mizzima Desa
the arahantas brought eight hair relics of Buddha to
Thuwunna Bhumi.
The king of that time, Thuwunna Maha Dhamma Daza,
had the pagoda built atop the Theinganeik Mount
enshrining two hair relics with the sponsorship of
the two arahantas. Queen Sanda Dewi donated an
emerald shawl bedecked with nine jewels costing more
than a hundred thousand pieces of silver, with a
golden rest for an almsbowl as the base. It was
variously called Theinganeik Pagoda, Thuwunna
Pagoda, Hair Relics Pagoda, Wish-granting Pagoda and
Emerald Almsbowl Pagoda. Now it is known as Emerald
Almsbowl Pagoda. |
