Kyaik-hmaw-wan Midstream Pagoda
Kyaik Hmaw Wan or the Yeylel Pagoda lies in
Kyaunktan Township, Yangon Division. In Sakarit 215,
King Bawgathena founded the Pada nation. In 238, the
king enshrined the sacred hair relic and other
relics given him by mentor hermit and built a pagoda
seven cubits high on a rock platform chosen by the
hermit.
It was called Kyaik-hmyaw Gadaw Pagoda. The tenth
king after that, King Twekka Naga enshrined a hair
relic and 27 chemical relics he got as gifts from
the King of Ceylon, in accord with the eight
arahantas from there.
He made vows that
(1) the platform shall never be flooded
(2) the pilgrims visiting there would have enough
space on the platform and
(3) the donor the pagoda should enjoy material
wealth even in this existence.
These vows are fulfilled and even now, the
platform of the pagoda is never flooded and never
crowded with visitors.
In 1271, lawyer U Ba Tun and wife Daw Thet Thet
built a pagoda to cover the original, to be 34
cubits and to have four entrances. The name of the
pagoda has since been Kyaik-hmaw-wun Midstream
Pagoda.
