Legyun Yanaung Phaungdaw-Oo Pagoda
The pagoda lies in Pathein, Ayeyawady Divi¬sion.
It was built by King Alaung Sithu while there on way
back from in Ceylon and mizzima desa in 1115. It had
a height of nine cubits. It was named Phaungdaw-Oo
Pagoda. The pagoda eventually suffered the ravages
of time. In 1455, Mayor Banya-Ain of Pathein City
rebuilt it and gave it a new name of Shwe Ok-aw. In
1524 and 1525, Mon Princess Wihara Dewi rebuilt it
and named it Chan-tha-gyi.
In 1939 it was rebuilt by Maha Bodhi Sayadaw U
Nandiya. It was circular in shape, covering the
original pagoda inside. It had a height of 84.5
feet. It was rebuilt to be completed in March 1950.
It was then called Pyilone Chantha. Wihara Dewi and
brother Byamar Dewa built two lakes, and so it was
also known as Yegyi and Yenaut pagoda. Now it is
known well as Legyun Yanaung Phaungdaw-Oo Pagoda. |
