Okshit Hla Pagoda
Okshit Hla Pagoda lies between Ward 3 and Ward 7
in Nyaungdon, Maubin District, Ayeyarwady Division.
It was built by Okshit Hla Mai, the queen of regent
Thiha Thura Maha Dhamma Yaza in the year 783. It was
said that Thama Dewa the king of nats gave her and
her brother four Buddha relics apiece to be
enshrined in their hair.
When Okshit Hla Mai was taken by Thiha Thura Maha
Dhamma Yaza, she found it most difficult to keep the
relics in her hair. So she asked for permission to
build a pagoda to enshrine the relics. The prince
gave her permission to do so. Thence the name Okshit
Hla Pagoda. The pagoda is 139 feet one inch in
height, including 16 feet 9 inches from the diamond
bud to the umbrella, IS feet S inches of plantain
bud, 10 feet tender lotus, 14 feet 8 inches of
lotuses upturned and downtumed, and 82 feet from the
emboss to die ground. The base is 100 feet in the
south, north and west and 99 feet in the east. |
