Shwemuhtaw Pagoda
Shwemuhtaw Pagoda was one among 84,000 pagodas
built by King Thiri Dhamma Thawka. It lies on Buddha
Hill, Shwechaung in Pakokku, Magway Division. The
name was given to coincide with the eclipse of the
moon mu-htaw, with the shwe added later with
donations of gold. Originally it was three cubits
and half, but with renovations done to it by nine
kings it is now 8 feet and 6 inches. King Innwa the
First built the gandakuti taik and the pagoda above
it. Of satellite pagodas, one contained a stone
inscription encasing the original at the Saturday
corner. It was said to be built by Shwemuhtaw
Sayadaw who died about 100 years ago. |
